ESL class goes to the Hershey Theatre - By Maria Mesias

On March 20th, 2012 the Advanced ESL class went to Hershey Theatre to see the play West Side Story. It was an exciting and educational experience. In the play, we the students were able to see the similarities between The West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet, the play that we just finished reading. The play is a modern version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and it was easy to understand. It was hilarious and fun to watch. We all enjoyed watching West Side Story and would watch it again if we could!

Fitting In Vs. Standing Out

The Foundations ESL class recently finished a unit which asked the question, "How Important Is it to Fit In?" Below, you will see written response from two of our students: Henry Chicas and Chris Reyes-Valle.

I think that standing out is more important than fitting in. Many people want to think alone, and they want to take a moment to think about the life. My reason is that when you stand out, you can concentrate, you feel more comfortable, and also you can feel clearer, and you can train you brain for ideas. For example, in my life when I’m standing out, I can think about all the problems that I have in my life and how I can figure it out. When I am in school it is important to stand out because it is unnecessary to be in only one group. I do not conflict with other people because I can be friends with everyone instead of only one small group.

-Henry Chicas

I think is more important to fit than to stand out. Most of the people want to be known. They want to have friends so that they have someone to hang out with and to work with. They want to be popular because they feel like no one knows them. Most of the people work better together if they are friends and if they know each other. So that’s why I think it’s better to fit in and not be left out. For example, in the class I had last year, people didn’t get along because they were not friends. They didn’t work together. They didn’t want to look at each other. This made it difficult for all the students that were in that class. That’s why I think if we are friends we work better together.
